About one in ten people suffer from allergies to household dust. The allergy is not caused directly by the dust mite but from components of the proteins contained in their droppings. These components are transferred to household dust and become part of the air that we breathe. Although generally harmless, the droppings of the dust mite can trigger allergic reactions in some people with symptoms such as itchy skin, redness and watering of the eyes, sneezing, runny nose and coughing.

Dust mites are microscopic insects invisible to the naked eye. It is normal for them to be present in our homes and they are not the result of uncleanliness. Their primary food source is dead skin cells from the human body. Damp and warmth provide ideal conditions for the mites, which is why they live mainly in mattresses, duvets and pillows and on fabric surfaces - all of which are hard to wash frequently.
